GOSHEN —
On his second try at selling his auction business, Leroy Graber got a bid he liked.
Now, five members of a family have purchased Peddler’s Village Auction from Graber. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon when Graber took a few moments out of calling out bids on items.
“I want to thank you guys for all your support and all you have done for us for all the years we have been here,” Graber told a large auction crowd.
Graber and his wife Dee purchased the auction in 1980 from Gerald Lambright, who had started the business in 1972 on Denver Street in Goshen.
The new owners are two sets of brothers and a brother-in-law. They are Al and Harley Lehman, Marlin Yoder, and Dennis and Jason Helmuth.
Al and his wife Amy will run the day-to-day operations with the others pitching in.
Graber told the crowd, “I am tickled that the business is going to go on.”
That was in doubt for a while because Graber had tried to auction off the consignment auction business and facilities on Peddler’s Village Road back in May of 2011. But nobody was interested, according to Graber.
So, he restarted the business until the economy improved enough to attract interested buyers.
The family group got involved because they had begun purchasing estates after work and then held an auction to sell their accumulation of goods.
“We had a big pile of stuff and said, ‘What are we going to do with it?’” Dennis Helmuth said. “Someone joked about buying Peddler’s Village, and here we are.”
“It’s been my dream,” Yoder said as the men gathered on the auction stage. He said the operation will remain pretty much the same but the new owners hope to add some specialty auctions in the coming months.
Graber said he will run this coming Thursday’s auction and then hand over ownership to the new owners.
