INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —
The Goshen News earned awards at the 2012 Hoosier State Press Association Better Newspaper Contest in Indianapolis Saturday afternoon, including three first-places and a third-place in general excellence behind the Anderson Herald Bulletin and Franklin Daily Journal.
The News competes in Category 4, which is newspapers with paid circulations between 8,000 and 18,000.
Reporter John Kline, Public Safety Editor Scott Weisser and Managing Editor Michael Wanbaugh were awarded first place for Best News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure for their reporting on the murder of Goshen College Professor Jim Miller.
Judges said of the coverage, “Not only did the newspaper find a way to write a story profoundly engaging on deadline, but it drew on sources well beyond just the institutional. ... This is the kind of story that solidifies trust in news and journalism.”
News Photojournalist Sam Householder won first place for Best Feature Photo for his photo of a wedding proposal in the heart of downtown Goshen during First Fridays.
The News staff also earned first place for Best Newspaper Design for the second consecutive year. The judges said of The News’ design, “The best flag, editorial page, use of typography, use of photos, reader appeal and organization. Graphic presentation was professional and not full of gimmicks.”
Goshen News columnist and correspondent Stephanie Price earned second place in the Best In-depth Feature category for her reporting on the death of two Amish children who were being pulled in a horse-drawn cart in eastern Elkhart County.
Sports Editor David Vantress was awarded second place for Best Sports Commentary
The staff also earned second place in the Headline Writing category and second place in the Best Special Section category for the annual “Who We Are” progress edition published in February.
City Editor Roger Schneider won third place in the Best Editorial Writer category. Wanbaugh and Schneider also earned third place for Best Editorial Page.
The Goshen News website (www.goshennews.com) was also awarded third place for Best Website.
Awards for the Indiana Collegiate Press Association were also given Saturday. Goshen College student Bohana Jankova earned second place for an article titled, “Undocumented immigrant shares her story on stage.”
