Crash on C.R. 115 injures Elkhart man

An Elkhart man was injured in a late-night crash on C.R. 115 north of Orchard Lane.

Derek Jernigan, 31, Elkhart, was traveling southeast on C.R. 115 around 12:30 a.m. when his 1987 Mazda RX7 left the roadway and struck two concrete sign posts and a county road sign, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department report.

Jernigan was transported to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was admitted for his injuries sustained in the crash, including broken ribs, a cut to his face and injuries to his sternum and spleen, according to the report. The crash is still being investigated for possible charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving while his license was suspended.

Man arrested on battery charge

Isidro Hernandez III, 22, 435 S. Silverwood Lane, Apt. 7, Goshen, was arrested at 6:37 p.m. Saturday on a charge of domestic battery in the presence of a minor, according to a Goshen City Police report. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

Theft/burglary reports

• Douglas Stump, Shipshewana, reported to Goshen police Saturday that someone stole the license plate off of his car while it was parked in his son’s garage, located at 1301 E. Plymouth Ave., sometime in the last two years.

• Eric Stutzman of E&C Properties reported to Goshen police that someone broke into one of his Goshen rental properties between Friday evening and Saturday evening and stole copper electrical wiring and plumbing lines, causing more than $1,500 in damage.

• Employees at Shoe Show, located at 2003 Lincolnway East, Goshen, reported to Goshen police that four people left the store without paying for several pairs of shoes around 7:51 p.m. Saturday.

• Nicole Ritter, 28, 356 Stone Drive, Apt. D, Goshen, was arrested at Meijer on a charge of theft, according to a Goshen police report. Ritter was released at the scene with a memorandum to appear in Goshen City Court.

Traffic arrests

• Camille Ann Navarro, 23, 1821 Berkey Ave., Apt. A, Goshen, was arrested on a charge of driving while her driver’s license was suspended around 5:56 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Elkhart Road and Greene Road, according to a Goshen police report. She was initially stopped for a violation of no brake lights.

Drug/alcohol arrests

• Kasandra Coney, 22, 514 N. Fifth St., Goshen, was arrested in the 2300 block of Lincolnway East around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on a charge of possession of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia after police were called to the Comfort Inn because of a strange smell coming from the room Coney rented. Goshen police located synthetic marijuana in the room, and Coney was jailed, according to a city police report.

• A 16-year-old male from Goshen was arrested for charges of underage drinking after he was found at Steak-N-Shake at 5:17 a.m. Sunday, according to Goshen police. He was released to his mother.

OWI arrests

• Adam Nussbaum, 30, 64213 Meadow Ridge Drive, Goshen, was arrested near South Indiana Avenue and West Plymouth Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Sunday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to a Goshen police report. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

    The Middlebury Police Department has received complaints from local residents of a scam that is being done in the area. Residents receive a call from an individual who identifies himself from Publishers Clearing House. He advises the resident that they have won a luxury car and $800,000 in cash.

    Goshen police were called to a vacant residence in the 400 block of North Fifth Street, Goshen, at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday. Officers found a 4-year-old and 3-month-old alone inside the residence.
