Police news: Driver allegedly punches rescuer

GOSHEN — The only person injured in a one-vehicle crash wasn’t the driver, but a Good Samaritan the driver allegedly hit in the face after the crash.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, on Ind. 15 near U.S. 20. According to Elkhart County police, A Pontiac four-door sedan driven by David Cain, 37, Elkhart, was headed south on Ind. 15 when it crossed the west boundary of the road and headed end over end down a hill.

William Edick was in a car behind the Pontiac in traffic and witnessed the car leave the road. Edick rushed to the sedan, from which smoke was rising, to help Cain.

“(The car) almost hit me, my fiancee and my daughter,” Edick said. “He was driving erratically and he left the road. I ran down there and I saw smoke. I tried to break the window, but it wouldn’t break, so I jerked the door open.”

By that time, another passerby, Mark DeWitt, stopped to help as well. DeWitt and Edick pulled Cain from the vehicle. However, Cain allegedly punched DeWitt in the mouth.

“I just left work, and I was headed home and saw the smoke,” DeWitt said. “The guy (Edick) was just getting (Cain) out of the car, and he staggered back and hit me.”

Edick and DeWitt said they were able to subdue Cain until off-duty officers responded, and then on-duty officers.

DeWitt was treated at the scene, and Cain was arrested on charges of battery, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and driving without a driver’s license, according to a responding police officer and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department prisoner database.
