Pastor charged with sexually assaulting girl

A Warsaw pastor has been arrested on a charge of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl police say has significant mental and physical handicaps.

Warsaw police say 77-year-old Robert Haywood was arrested Friday following a three-month investigation. He is charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and sexual battery, all felony counts. Police say he is a pastor at Harvest Time Ministries Church in Warsaw.

Police say Haywood is accused of inappropriately sexually touching the girl in the church basement and of having sex with her.

He was released from the Kosciusko County Jail on a $10,000 bond. No court date was set and court records did not indicate whether Haywood had hired an attorney.

Overpressure devices found in Goshen

Goshen police officers were dispatched to the 800 block of North Greene Road at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in reference to a suspicious plastic bottle. Officers reportedly located several bottles that were used as overpressure devices. Pictures were taken of the bottles prior to them being discarded. A case report was taken.

Off-road crash

Indiana Conservation officers are investigating an off-road vehicle accident that occurred at 3:25 p.m. Thursday in Noble County.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Tommie L. Higginbotham, 68, Albion, was operating a John Deere Gator on a private drive at 3369 East 200 North with his 4-year-old granddaughter as his passenger. Higginbotham reportedly lost control of the Gator for an unknown reason, causing it to overturn and land in a drainage ditch next to his driveway. Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle.

Higginbotham was transported to Parkview Regional Hospital, Fort Wayne, by Noble County EMS for treatment of abrasions to his elbow and head. The 4-year-old was not injured in the accident. Officers were assisted at the scene by the Noble County Sheriff’s Department and the Albion Fire Department.

Theft/burglary reports

• Roger Cripe, Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole a trash can from his rental property at 109 W. Pike St., Goshen, sometime within the last couple of days.

• Brian Pluhar, 207 S. Silverwood Lane, Goshen, told Goshen police someone withdrew $1,000 from his bank account without his permission at around 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

• Courtney Hails, Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole her medication and clothing while she was hospitalized at a local hospital at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

• John Bond, 618 N. Fifth St., Goshen, told Goshen police his residence was burglarized at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday. A report was taken.

• Derek D. Happ, 519 Silverwood Lane, Goshen, told Goshen police his home was burglarized at approximately 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. A report was taken.

• James Swartzendruber, Goshen, told Goshen police several unauthorized charges were made to his Interra Credit Union checking account at approximately 12 a.m. Aug. 15.

• Brad E. Kaiser, 52387 C.R. 39, Middlebury, told Elkhart County police a trash can was stolen from in front of his house between 11:26 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Assault/battery reports

• Tammy Platt, 22, 1823 Bashor Road, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police at 12:04 a.m. Friday at her home on a charge of battery. She was booked into the county jail.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• William Young, 1105 S. 15th St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone spray painted the siding of his house between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
