Goshen police capture escapee

GOSHEN — A man who escaped from the Elkhart County Work Release Center was caught by Goshen police while reportedly attempting to hide in a home he broke into this morning.

According to Goshen police, at approximately 9:24 a.m. today, officers were notified that Willie R. Peavy, 30, formerly of 919 Bontrager Ave., Elkhart, had escaped from the Elkhart County Work Release facility at 201 N Cottage Ave.

Peavy had reportedly entered — without permission — a home at 103 W. Wilkinson St. When work release personnel arrived at that location, Peavy reportedly fled through a window in the back of the home.

Police reported that Peavy then made his way to 415 N. First St. where he entered the residence without permission and attempted to hide in the upstairs of the home.

Goshen officers, including a K-9 unit, arrived at the First Street address and persuaded Peavy to surrender to authorities.  At 9:43 a.m., Peavy was arrested on charges of escape from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Work Release facility and two counts of residential entry. Peavy was transported to the Elkhart County Jail.
