UPDATE: Halliburton's jury now in deliberations

GOSHEN — Tyrice Halliburton’s lawyer says there is reasonable doubt his client committed a crime.

Tyrice Halliburton is a murderer, prosecutors allege.

A jury is in the process assessing those contrary viewpoints in Elkhart Circuit Court.

Defense and prosecuting attorneys made their closing statements this morning in the murder trial of Halliburton, 30. The jury left the courtroom shortly before 12:30 p.m. today to begin deliberations.

Halliburton is accused of killing Sheena Kiska, 23, at Bristol’s River Shores Apartments on March 18, 2008. Authorities say Halliburton killed Kiska after she came home while he was burglarizing her apartment. Halliburton had been her next-door neighbor.

Defense attorney said today there is no DNA evidence linking Halliburton to the murder. He called into question whether Halliburton could have done what is alleged — kill Kiska, clean up and get rid of the clothes he wore — in the timeframe laid out by prosecutors. He also questioned the veracity of Halliburton’s former girlfriend, who testified Wednesday that Halliburton told her about the murder shortly after he committed it.

Prosecutors, however, said the ex-girlfriend simply connected the dots in the case against Halliburton they’d already made.

Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill termed the killing of Kiska “a slaughter.”

“She was stabbed over 50 times,” Hill told the jury. “She never had a chance ... Can you imagine what was going on in her mind?”
