Pursuit ends in crash near Syracuse

Two teens airlifted to hospital

SYRACUSE — Two teens were airlifted to a hospital after their vehicle crashed during a police pursuit Saturday near Syracuse.

Driver Andrew W. Gabbard, 19, Wawaka, and passenger Alexandra I. Hernandez, 18, Cromwell, were extricated after the early morning collision at C.R. 1250 North and East Wawasee Drive.

Hernandez was listed in critical condition Saturday night at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. She suffered a lower leg amputation, internal injuries and multiple fractures. Gabbard suffered a possible broken arm and other minor injuries, police said. He was listed in fair condition Saturday at Parkview.

According to Kosciusko County authorities, the incident began when police responded to a domestic battery call at a home along C.R. 1300 North near Warner Road around 2 a.m.

A deputy arrived but was unable to get anyone to answer the door. The officer left, according to police, but subsequently noticed a vehicle that had been parked at the home drive off.

Police said the deputy caught up to the vehicle — a 2007 Pontiac G6 driven by Gabbard — and tried to make a traffic stop on C.R. 1300 North. Gabbard allegedly fled, eventually driving east on C.R. 1250 North.

Police said Gabbard disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of East Wawasee Drive. He lost control of the Pontiac, which skidded sideways and struck two pine trees on the north side of the road. The vehicle sheared off one of the trees and rolled over onto the roadway, trapping the occupants.

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
