Two airlifted after Ligonier crash

Three people were hurt in a car-truck crash on U.S. 33 south of Ligonier at 8:42 a.m. Thursday.

According to a report from the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, Jeffrey D. Hochstedler, 53, Goshen, was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius south on U.S. 33 near Roxanne Drive south of Ligonier when for an unknown reason the car went left of the centerline, colliding with an oncoming 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The truck was driven by Alden M. Fausnaugh, 75, Ligonier.

Both drivers were flown by Samaritan helicopter to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, and were in serious condition. Hochstedler had left arm, head and chest injuries.

Fausnaugh had chest pain.

A passenger in the truck, Marvey Sponhauer, Ligonier, had body pain and was taken by ground ambulance to Parkview Noble Hospital for treatment. He was listed in stable condition.

Both vehicles were demolished.

Driver injured

A Michigan teenager was injured in a one-vehicle rollover crash at 12:04 p.m. Wednesday northeast of Elkhart.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Natasha M. Cummins, 17, Union, was driving a 2005 Ford Escape south on C.R. 17, north of C.R. 4, when the vehicle went off the west edge of the road. In trying to correct the vehicle, the driver lost control and the Ford rolled over several times.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage for a time before being freed by members of the Bristol Fire Department. She was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of cuts to her arm and for arm and leg pain.

The vehicle had extensive damage.

Graffiti found

Goshen police received a report of graffiti being painted on pavement at Rogers Park sometime Monday night or early Tuesday. No estimate of damage was made.

Mail stolen

Goshen police received a report Tuesday from Jennifer Schrock, 1205 S. Main St., that mail was stolen and her mailbox was damaged. No estimate of the loss was included in the report.

Bristol burglary

According to a sheriff’s department report, Chad Hershberger, 20983 Arcadia Drive, Bristol, reported his house was burglarized sometime last week. Taken were six wrist watches, a digital camera, laptop computer and Playstation 3. The incident is under investigation.

Man reports he

was robbed Saturday

Sheriff’s officers received a report of a robbery in Elkhart early Saturday morning.

Jeffrey Henderson, Elkhart, reported to sheriff’s officers that he was robbed near Modrell Avenue and Baldwin Court at 12:07 a.m. Saturday. The incident is under investigation.

Computer

taken from home

Elkhart County Sheriff’s officers received a report of a computer being stolen in a house burglary Monday. Officers received a report from Alan Stamper, 1609 Harrison Ridge Lane, Goshen, on Monday that a laptop computer was taken from his home between Wednesday and Saturday. No value was set on the loss.

Teacher threatened

Sheriff’s officers were called to Ivy Tech college, 22531 C.R. 18, Elkhart, at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday after a teacher reported she had been threatened. The teacher said she was threatened by a student in her class. The incident is under investigation.

Elkhart station robbed

According to an Elkhart city police report, there was a strong-armed robbery at 7-Eleven, 2700 S. Main St., at 6:56 a.m. Tuesday. A suspect fled with an undetermined amount of money. The robbery is under investigation.

Restaurant robbed

Elkhart city police received a report of an armed robbery at a restaurant Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were called to Penguin Point, 301 W. Lusher Ave., at 1:44 p.m. Tuesday after an armed robbery. No one was hurt. The incident is under investigation.

Man with gun takes iPods from Walmart

Elkhart police reported they were called to Walmart, 175 West C.R. 6, at 9:34 p.m. Tuesday after an armed robbery.

Police said a black male suspect wearing an orange shirt had a gun tucked in his pants when he took two iPods from the store. The items are valued at $590.

The incident is under investigation.

Alcohol arrests

• Goshen police reported the arrest of Edward I. Stevens, 44, Chicago, at Lincolnway East and Keystone Drive at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday. The driver reportedly refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test and was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was later booked at the county jail.

• Sheriff’s officers cited Mark A. Rokop, 38, Osceola, with driving while intoxicated after a traffic stop at Ash Road, south of C.R. 6, at 11:15 p.m. Friday. He was booked at the county jail on the charge.

• According to a sheriff’s report, a vehicle driven by Frankie Ornatowski, 23, Elkhart, was stopped at Ind. 120 near C.R. 131 east of Bristol at 1:19 a.m. Saturday. The driver was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was booked at the county jail and bond was set at $1,500.

• Sheriff’s officers reported stopping a vehicle on Ind. 15, south of C.R. 40, at 11 p.m. Saturday because the vehicle crossed the centerline. Officers arrested Dan Khailo, 34, 70633 U.S. 33, Ligonier, charging him with driving while intoxicated. He was booked at the county jail.

• According to a sheriff’s department report, a car was stopped because the driver was swerving at Ind. 19, south of North Shore Drive at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. The driver, Benjamin Jack Born, 31, Marcellus, Mich., was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after reportedly failing a blood-alcohol test. He was booked into the couty jail on $3,000 bond.

 

Man with gun arrested

Michael C. Vanlaningham, 24, Dove Street, was arrested in Milford Aug. 12 after allegedly firing a single shot from a handgun in the air. Milford Police officers arrested Vanlaningham and charged him with criminal recklessness after responding to a call of a man with a gun around 3 p.m.
