Police and court news for Sept. 1

Elkhart police reported the arrest Tuesday of a man whom they suspect is responsible for at least two robberies in that city this week.

Police were called at 10 p.m. Monday to the Subway restaurant at 2510 Benham Ave. after a robber who acted as if he had a weapon in his waistband fled after taking cash.

Then at 5 a.m. Tuesday, the Yoder Mart at 1129 Johnson St. was robbed, with the description of the robber matching that of the suspect in the Monday night holdup.

Police said Elkhart Sgt. Karl Miller responded Tuesday morning to the Yoder Mart incident and saw a suspect, who fled on foot. Miller caught up to the man, later identified as George H. Johnson, 35, Elkhart, and arrested him on charges of robbery, fleeing police and resisting arrest.

Police are investigating whether the recent string of robberies is related to other incidents reported in recent months.

Driver arrested

after collision

A Mishawaka driver was arrested after his vehicle reportedly rear-ended a Concord school bus at C.R. 105 near Charles Street at 4:20 p.m. Monday.

According to Elkhart County police, a vehicle driven by Charles L. Gregory, 49, Mishawaka, collided with the rear of the bus.

Police said Gregory fled the scene but was found nearby by an Elkhart city police officer who also responded to the crash.

Greagor was incarcerated at the county jail on charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and on a warrant for nonpayment of child support.

Children on the bus were not injured but were taken to a medical facility for checkups after Concord Township ambulance crews were called.

One man killed in

Kosciusko crash

A Rochester man was killed and two others were severely injured when a small pickup truck struck a tree early Tuesday morning in southwest Kosciusko County.

According to Kosciusko County police, officers were called at 1:15 a.m. to the scene of a crash at C.R. 700 West, just south of C.R. 850 South.

Rescue workers arrived to find three people in a 2000 Ford Ranger truck that had struck a tree.

Dead is Lucas R. Manns, 25, Rochester, who suffered head injuries.

Injured were Joey Manns, 19, Rochester, and Leha D. Oaks, 20, Burket, who both suffered head injuries. Manns was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and later transferred to Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Oaks was airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Both were listed in serious condition Tuesday.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.

Thefts reported

• A Goshen resident reported an incident of identity theft to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Monday.

According to a sheriff’s report, Raymond Taylor, 38, Goshen, said someone used his personal information to fill a prescription several months ago.

• A Goshen resident reported the theft of medicine from her vehicle Sunday.

According to a report by Elkhart County police , Kylie Hewitt, Goshen, said medication was stolen from the glove compartment of her vehicle at 7:25 a.m. Sunday. No value was set on the loss.

• Goshen police received a report at 6 a.m. Tuesday from Daniel Rhamey, 219 Tanglewood, Apt. B, that his car stereo and speakers were stolen sometime after 10 p.m. Monday. No value was set on the loss.

Motorist arrested

According to a report by Goshen police, a vehicle driven by William Everest, 18, 54727 Brookside Drive, Elkhart, was stopped at Pike and Second streets at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday. Everest was arrested on a charge of driving while his operator’s license is suspended, a Class A misdemeanor. He was incarcerated the county jail on $1,500 bond.

Handgun displayed

Goshen police received a report at 7:15 p.m. Monday from residents near Sixth Street and Lincoln Avenue that someone pulled a handgun from his waistband during an argument at the intersection.

Man pleads guilty

to drug charges

A Nappanee man who was to stand trial on drug charges entered guilty pleas Monday as his trial was set to start in Elkhart Circuit Court.

Jimmy Lee McGowen, 37, Nappanee, was charged with delivery of methamphetamine, with one count a Class A felony and two counts as Class B felonies.

McGowen agreed to enter guilty pleas to all three counts, with the agreement that all prison sentences imposed may be served concurrently. He faces a prison term of up to 50 years for conviction of a Class A felony.

Judge Terry Shewmaker set sentencing for Oct. 7.

McGowen was represented in court by Benjamin Pfaff.

Presenting the case for the state was deputy prosecutor David Francisco.

A jury panel that had been called to Circuit Court was dismissed Monday morning.
