Man arrested on burglary charge
A homeless man was arrested on a burglary charge by Milford police Wednesday afternoon.
Milford Marshal Richard Miotto responded to a report of a burglary in progress at 106 S. West St. at 1:20 p.m. and soon located a man at James and Fourth streets.
Miotto arrested Leroy Harry Zartman, 50, Milford, on a charge of burglary, a Class C felony.
Police reported that Zartman said he had been living in a vehicle and in sheds and outbuildings in Milford.
Miotto is investigating if there are other possible incidents related to Zartman’s alleged vagrancy in town limits.
Zartman was incarcerated in the Kosciusko County jail with bond set at $5,000.
Guilty plea filed in fraud case
An eye surgery practice that federal officials continued to prosecute after the death of the doctor and his wife is pleading guilty to making false statements to obtain payments for health care.
Gabriele Eye Institute PC agreed to pay $205,000 in restitution as part of the plea agreement with federal prosecutors filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in South Bend. The corporation also will forfeit half the net proceeds from the sale of the medical office in Mishawaka, estimated at $300,000.
Police found Philip Gabriele and his wife dead of an apparent murder-suicide at his Elkhart office June 15, three days after they and their practice were named in an indictment accusing them of financial fraud and injuring patients through unnecessary procedures.
Man sentenced on drug charge
A Goshen man who was accused of being involved in a large marijuana growing operation in Kosciusko County was sentenced to more than seven years in prison when he appeared in federal court this week.
According to a report from U.S. District Court in South Bend, Mario Comacho, 45, Goshen, was sentenced to 87 months imprisonment and four years of supervised release after he entered a guilty plea to possession with the intent to distribute marijuana in the amount of more than 100 plants.
Comacho was helping supervise a large marijuana growing operation southeast of Syracuse when he was arrested.
Police arrest Goshen man
Police who were searching for a runaway at a Goshen home at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday arrested a resident on drug charges.
According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, they arrested Anthony W. Cook, 21, 111 E. Pike St., apt. A, on charges of maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony, and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated in the county jail.
The runaway was not found at the Pike Street apartment, police said.
