Pedestrian struck by van on C.R. 38



A Goshen woman was hurt in a van-pedestrian accident at 7:04 a.m. Tuesday at U.S. 33 and C.R. 38.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, George C. Vasbinder, 64, Goshen, was driving a Dodge Ram van south on U.S. 33 and began to turn left onto C.R. 38.

Ivonne Perez, 39, Goshen, was walking south across C.R. 38 at the same time and was struck by the van’s front bumper. She had back pain and was taken to Goshen General Hospital for treatment.

Vasbinder said he did not see the pedestrian due to the darkness and heavy rainfall.

Driver hurt when four vehicles collide



One driver was hurt in a four-vehicle chain reaction crash at U.S. 33 north of Arlene Avenue in Dunlap at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, three vehicles were stopped northbound on U.S. 33 when they were struck by a fourth vehicle that did not stop.

Police said Julia Stauffer, 74, Elkhart, drove a 2002 Chrysler van that struck a 1997 Honda Civic driven by Wesley King, 28, Pierceton. The Honda was pushed into the rear of a 2000 Mercury driven by Susan Bower, 23, Goshen, which then struck a 2005 Dodge Dakota truck driven by Joe Wenger, 59, Elkhart.

King had head pain and was taken by a Concord fire department ambulance crew to Goshen General hospital for treatment.

Stauffer was ticketed for following too closely.

Driver to be deported



An unlicensed Elkhart driver was jailed after a traffic stop by an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputy at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday.

According to a sheriff’s reported, a green Nissan Pathfinder was stopped at C.R. 20 and Old Farm Drive as the driver made an improper turn.

The driver, Pablo Mejia Diaz, 31, Elkhart, was cited for never obtaining a driver’s license and was jailed on a deportation warrant. He was held without bond on the federal warrant.

Traffic stop leads to arrest



A driver stopped for an improper taillight at Ind. 19 and C.R. 4 at 12:26 a.m. Tuesday was jailed on other charges.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Sonny James Craig, 25, Edwardsburg, Mich., was charged with possession of stolen property and never receiving a license. He was booked at the county jail. He was also ticketed for having improper taillights on his vehicle.

Woman ticketed after cars demolished



Two vehicles were demolished and one driver was hurt in a two-car crash at 5:26 p.m. Tuesday at Ind. 15 and C.R. 146 near New Paris.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Bridget Fryman, 28, New Paris, was driving a 2004 Subaru station wagon east on C.R. 146, stopped at Ind. 15 and drove into the intersection.

The car collided with a southbound 2004 Buick driven by Lois Neff, 71, New Paris.

Fryman had head pain after the crash.

She was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Culp said both vehicles were demolished in the crash.
