State police say Vanderburgh County in southern Indiana led the state in the most methamphetamine labs seized last year, the second straight year it’s earned that distinction.
State police report the county that is home to Evansville had 116 meth labs found there in 2011. That’s up from county 95 a year earlier.
It was followed by two northern Indiana counties, Elkhart County with 71 and Kosciusko County with 58.
Bartholomew County in central Indiana was next with 57, and Decatur County in eastern Indiana with 55.

Two-year prison term for coin dealer
An Elkhart businessman was sentenced to 24 months in prison and fined $30,000 after he entered guilty pleas in U.S. District Court to charges of tax evasion, Social Security fraud and bankruptcy fraud.

Battery of teen reported
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s department received a report from an employee of Bashor Children’s Home, 62226 C.R. 15, Goshen, at 2 p.m. that a 14-year-old boy battered a 13-year-old boy at the school about 1:30 p.m.

Community members take time to honor fallen officers
More than 100 people attended an annual Law Enforcement Memorial service Tuesday evening at the Goshen Police and Courts building. The event is held each year to remember officers who have been lost in the line of service and to honor those who currently serve.

The increased police presence at recent First Fridays appears to be making a difference, but also comes with a cost. The amount of total manpower used by Goshen Police Department for First Fridays over the past four months has more than tripled from 32 hours to 104 hours compared to 2011.
