Police and fire news for Jan. 15

Fire destroys home

A house and garage were destroyed and two others houses damaged by a fire that was reported in Turkey Creek Township at 5:03 a.m. Thursday.

According to a report by Fire Chief Mickey Scott, firefighters were called to East Sleepy Hollow Parkway and found the house at 9252 E. Wizard of Oz Way engulfed in flames.

The two-story house and garage were owned by Michael D. Ensign.

Syracuse firefighters called for mutual aid from North Webster and Cromwell firefighters, who shuttled about 10,000 gallons of water to the scene.

The Ensign home, garage and a vehicle were destroyed. The homes at 9244 E. Wizard of Oz Way and 9270 Wizard of Oz were damaged by heat from the fire, Chief Scott said.

No one was hurt in the incident or the firefight. Total damage is estimated at $167,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.



Crash injures five

Five people were injured in a four-vehicle crash at C.R. 33, north of U.S. 6 at 3:53 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Cheryl Kroemer, 63, Syracuse, was driving a 2006 Pontiac south on C.R. 33, was distracted by something in her car and did not notice traffic ahead of her was stopped.

The Pontiac hit the rear of a 1999 Ford F-150 truck driven by Richard Sleppy, 78, Goshen. The Sleppy truck was pushed into a 1993 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Donald Walker, 69, Syracuse, which in turn hit a 1998 Ford Econoline van driven by David Baker, 50, Syracuse. Baker was stopped waiting to turn into his driveway and the other two vehicles were behind his.

Kroemer had chest pain, Sleppy had chest pain, Walker had back pain and Baker had neck pain. Dennis Kimpel, 63, Goshen, a passenger in the Sleppy truck, had leg pain.

The injured were taken to Goshen General Hospital for treatment.
