Suspect arrested in Elkhart shooting

LIGONIER —

An Elkhart man has been arrested on a charge of attempted murder after a shooting at 2:40 p.m. Friday near 705 Marion St. in Elkhart.

According to Elkhart police, officers responded to a call at the address and found the victim, Jerry Derry Jr., who was taken to Elkhart General Hospital and underwent surgery.

Police determined they had a suspect and Sunday evening at 10:50 p.m. they arrested Shane Blake, 32, Elkhart, at Highland Mobile Home Park, 1901 Osolo Road.

Blake was initially charged with attempted murder and held at the county jail.

Driver arrested

One driver was arrested after a two-vehicle injury crash at 7:26 p.m. Sunday at Noble County Roads 500 East and 415 North.

According to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, a 1992 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Harold Bruce, Wolcottville, was traveling west on C.R. 415 North and failed to stop at the intersection.

The car collided with a southbound 2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette driven by Michael Burton, Fort Wayne.

Bruce and his wife, Janice Bruce, were taken to Parkview Hospital for treatment of neck and back injuries. Their children, Katlinn, 6, and Megan, 4 months, were flown to Fort Wayne Parkview Hospital by Samaritan for treatment of internal injuries.

Police said open alcoholic beverage containers were found outside the Bruce Chevrolet after the crash.

Bruce was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated as a Class D felony, according to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department.

Burton and his passengers declined medical attention.

Model School playground vandalized

Goshen police received a report of vandalism of playground equipment at an elementary school Friday.

An unknown person spray painted playground equipment at Model School, 412 Greene Road, last week, according to a report by Ptl. Wayne Jennette.

The incident is under investigation.

Bar patron arrested

Goshen police reported the arrest of a teen-ager at a downtown bar at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police said they cited Gustavo Cedeno, 19, 614 S. Sixth St., on a charge of illegal consumption of alcoholic beverages at the Whitehorse Pub. He was cited and released.

Shoplifting reported

Goshen police were called to Walmart, 2304 Lincolnway East, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday after a juvenile was accused of shoplifting. The young girl was cited and released to parents.

Home burglarized

Goshen police received a report from Amy Rizor, 245 Brookside Manor, that her home was burglarized sometime before 11:15 p.m. Saturday. No report of the loss was included in the report.

Driver cited

Goshen police said they cited Luis A. Perea Flores, 20, 855 W. U.S. 6, lot 5, Ligonier, after a traffic stop for speeding at the 1400 block of Elkhart Road at 11:45 p.m. Saturday. The Ligonier driver was arrested on a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol and released.

Nappanee man arrested

Goshen police reported the arrest of Anthony Slabaugh, 28, 253 E. Centennial St., Nappanee, after a traffic stop at Riverside and West avenues at 4:11 p.m. Sunday. He was arrested on a charge of driving while his license was suspended for five years. The offense is a felony.

Two arrested in Goshen

Goshen police reported the arrest of Mark Fioritto, 48, at 2808 Woodmere Lane, Goshen, at 6 p.m. Sunday. He was arrested on charges of domestic battery and strangulation and booked at the county jail. Also arrested at the same time was Cheryl Garrett, 42, who was arrested on a charge of domestic battery and also booked into jail.

Driver arrested in Elkhart

According to a report by Elkhart police, a vehicle driven by Raymond Wawzynski, 45, 53266 Pine Drive, Middlebury, was stopped in the 1100 block of E. Hively Ave. in Elkhart at 7:07 p.m. Saturday. The driver was arrested on a charge of driving after his license was suspended.

Theft from car reported

A Goshen man reported a theft from his vehicle to Elkhart police at 10:30 a.m. Friday. According to the Elkhart police report, John Landgraf, 115 Kousa Court, Goshen, told police items valued at $220 were removed from his 1993 Ford Explorer while parked in the 1500 block of Frances Avenue.

Alcohol arrests

Goshen police reported the arrest of Angela Velez, 43, 712 W. Marion St., Elkhart, after she was stopped for erratic driving in the 1900 block of Elkhart Road. She was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, a Class D felony, and never obtaining a license.
