An Oregon man was arrested on several drug-related charges Thursday after a U-Haul truck he had rented was found to contain approximately 90 pounds of marijuana.

According to Indiana State police, a State Police K-9 trooper stopped a U-Haul rental truck for a traffic infraction near the Elkhart East exit on the Indiana Toll Road at around 9:40 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the vehicle, Kelly Sullivan, 39, Nehalem, Ore., was reportedly traveling in the U-Haul from Oregon to New York. Suspicious of the man’s story, the trooper ran his K-9 partner Sabre around the truck, resulting in a positive alert indicating the vehicle may contain illegal drugs.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the passenger compartment. Sullivan was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia and transported to the Elkhart County Jail.

While working on getting a search warrant to gain access to the locked portion of the U-Haul, the trooper reportedly received a call from Brian Kraynik, 36, Bandon, Ore., who indicated he had been the one to rent the truck, and told the officer that he had put several pounds of marijuana in the back of the truck without the knowledge of Sullivan. Kraynik later turned himself in to authorities at the Toll Road State Police Post. He was arrested on charges of dealing marijuana, a Class C felony, and possession of marijuana, a Class D felony. He was booked into the county jail.

Once access to the rear of the U-Haul was obtained, police indicated 13 boxes containing 90 pounds of marijuana were found. The marijuana is reported to have a street value of approximately $4,000 to $5,000 per pound.

Man convicted

An Elkhart Superior Court 3 jury Friday found Tim L. Hyser, 54, Elkhart, guilty of one count of Child Molesting, a Class A felony, and one county of child molesting, a Class C felony. Hyser is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 27 at 9 a.m. in the Elkhart Superior Court 3. Hyser faces a maximum possible sentence of 58 years.

Theft/burglary reports

• Thomas Young, Elkhart, told Goshen police several compact discs were stolen from out of his vehicle while he was shopping at Meijer, 4522 Elkhart Road, Goshen, at 11:11 a.m. Friday.

• Joe Angel Flores Jr., 19, 308 Oakridge Ave., Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police at 6:25 p.m. Friday on a charge of theft while at Martin’s Supermarket, 1527 Bashor Road, Goshen. He was booked into the county jail.

• Glen Peters, 121 1/2 S. Main St., Goshen, told Goshen police he found a man attempting to gain entry to the back door of his apartment at 2:05 a.m. Saturday. He reported he was able to scare the man off and nothing was taken.

• Robert Sutherland, Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole his jacket while he was inside the Double D’s bar, 827 Lincolnway E., Goshen, at 2:38 a.m. Saturday.

• Catherine Murr, 144 Tulip Blvd., Goshen, told Goshen police someone attempted to force entry into her home and was unsuccessful at approximately 4:50 a.m. Saturday.

• Middlebury Police are currently seeking information from the public connected  to three automobile thefts that occurred in the Middlebury area over the past week. Anyone with information connected to any of these thefts is asked to contact the Middlebury Police Department immediately.

OWI arrests

• Lance E. Lowery, 30, 25903 C.R. 4, Elkhart, was arrested by Goshen police at 1:53 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of East Plymouth Avenue on a charge of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated. He was booked into the county jail.
