A head-on, two-vehicle crash in Benton Township killed a mo-ped rider Monday night.
Dead is Jeremy Yates, 20, Nappanee.
Elkhart County police said the crash occurred at 6:47 p.m. on C.R. 50 east of C.R. 35. A 2005 Jeep Liberty was headed west on C.R. 50 when the driver passed a horse-drawn vehicle.
The Jeep then collided head-on with Yate’s mo-ped. Yates was ejected, and the mo-ped was broken into multiple pieces. Police said Yates was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three passengers in the Jeep were injured. Police said William Perry, 20, Goshen, suffered a head injury and lacerations. Randall Purtell, 20, Milford, suffered head and back injuries, and Melissa Yoder, Ligonier, 28, had upper back pain. All three were airlifted to a hospital; police indicated the passengers’ injuries were not life-threatening.
Police haven’t determined the driver of the Jeep.
