Monday is Labor Day, the final day of an extended weekend that starts today. A product of the labor movement, the holiday on the first Monday in September honors contributions and achievements of American workers.
Minus retirees and children, that’s us. Tributes come in many forms. This weekend, we can think of no better homage to laborers than leisure.
Have fun. At the same time, have some common sense.
This year, Labor Day is doing double duty in the Elkhart County area. The Drought of 2012 scuttled fireworks celebrations a couple months ago, and no doubt many folks are plotting to blow off their accumulated explosives.
We like fireworks as much as anyone. We’re equally averse to fire and pain.
Put another way, light ’em if you’ve got ’em. Consider your surroundings, though, and take stock of where a stray spark could ignite a blaze. Take personal care, too, when you light the fuse. Fireworks and babies are alike in one key regard: They should be handled with care.
For many laborers, long weekends lend themselves to having a drink or two. Nothing wrong with that. The problem arises when people have more than a few and get behind the wheel of an automobile.
Police officers will be out in force this weekend. They’ll be on the lookout for impaired drivers, and we applaud their efforts. Cracking down on drunken driving isn’t about ruining someone’s good time — it’s about keeping everyone else alive.
To those who choose to drink this weekend, we ask that you do so sensibly and stay away from the wheel. To the police officers who will pull over the motorists who don’t take our advice, we say thanks.

Palm Sunday tornadoes a reminder of sudden danger
It was a beautiful day, most people around these parts who can remember will tell you. It was one of those near-perfect, early spring days, they would likely say, a stark contrast to what early evening would bring on April 11, 1965.
Yes, the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak of 1965, is still very vivid in our local history five decades later. Those were days before Doppler Radar, 24-7 cable television, countywide siren warning systems and even seatbelts in most cars. So, when afternoon turned to early evening, many local residents had little or no warning that killer tornadoes were nearly on top of them. -
