Femi Hollinger-Janzen, a 2012 Bethany Christian High School graduate, had plenty to live up to when he arrived in Bloomington, Ind. this past August.
In high school Hollinger-Janzen was an unmistakable star, dominating the local soccer fields in legendary fashion. His senior year at Bethany, Hollinger-Janzen led the semistate runner-up Bruins to an 18-4-1 record while scoring 29 goals and adding eight assists. For his efforts Hollinger-Janzen was named a first-team All-American and Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year.
Hollinger-Janzen finished his career at Bethany with a record 67 goals. He also had 23 career assists and 157 career points, second only to 1988 graduate Scott Bodiker who had 165 career points.
When it came time to choose a college, Hollinger-Janzen went with Indiana University and its men’s soccer program that already had accumulated seven national championships. Despite his remarkable accomplishments, Hollinger-Janzen was still a freshman for the Hoosiers, and had to pay some dues. Still, Hollinger-Janzen played in every game, starting four of them. He notched his first career goal on an 18-yard blast against Kentucky and scored his second career goal in a 2-1 loss to Michigan.
The Hoosiers managed to sneak into the NCAA tournament as a No. 16 seed. Hollinger-Janzen stepped up his game when it was needed most. He scored his third goal of the season in a first-round win over Xavier. IU went on to upset No. 1 Notre Dame and then North Carolina for a berth in the NCAA College Cup Final Four.
Hollinger-Janzen dominated in the semi-final game against Creighton, firing off three shots, in a 1-0 win, including the eventual game-winner in the 27th minute that put the Hoosiers in the championship game. He also had a second goal that was disallowed after officials determined the ball crossed the goal just after the first half had ended.
On Dec. 9, IU won its unlikely eighth national title with a 1-0 win over Georgetown. Hollinger-Janzen had three more shots in that game. His tournament performance earned him a spot on the College Cup All-Tournament team. He was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
Those are the facts about Femi. Here’s another one: This newspaper is very proud of him and his outstanding accomplishments. To be an NCAA Division I national champion as a freshman is impressive indeed. Hollinger-Janzen is a positive reflection of our community and we look forward to many more of his successes in the future. Congratulations, Femi, and thanks for representing all of us so well.

Palm Sunday tornadoes a reminder of sudden danger
It was a beautiful day, most people around these parts who can remember will tell you. It was one of those near-perfect, early spring days, they would likely say, a stark contrast to what early evening would bring on April 11, 1965.
Yes, the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak of 1965, is still very vivid in our local history five decades later. Those were days before Doppler Radar, 24-7 cable television, countywide siren warning systems and even seatbelts in most cars. So, when afternoon turned to early evening, many local residents had little or no warning that killer tornadoes were nearly on top of them. -
