An annual recognition of just how good our local Goshen College is has shown up on newsstands and Internet publications recently. The college has been included on several lists by editors of national and regional magazines and this inclusion means GC is accomplishing the mission it has embraced — educate students well in the liberal arts.
Goshen’s College is small, but still has achieved these high rankings. We believe professors there are hard working and earnest in fulfilling their duties and the students drawn to Goshen College arrive from around the world with the desire to better themselves as well as earn a degree and start a career. And isn’t that trio of goals what college should be about?
We found the Forbes magazine ranking particularly interesting because among Indiana colleges and universities on the list, GC was listed as eighth in the state. Goshen College was behind Notre Dame, DePauw, Wabash, Hanover, St. Mary’s, Taylor and Indiana University — Bloomington. We were not surprised to read that GC finished ahead of some much larger state institutions, including Valparaiso, Purdue, Butler, Indiana State and Ball State.
This type of recognition certainly enhances the well-established positive image the college enjoys across the nation. Future students and their parents will be able to reference these rankings and the past rankings the college has earned and add them to the many things they will have to consider to when picking a college.
We are glad to see that others in the media have again recognized the high-quality of education students are provided at Goshen College. We have know for years that the college has provided good opportunities for students. The proof of that is that many GC graduates are now leaders in our local health care and business communities and are active in volunteering in many capacities in Goshen and Elkhart County.
From time to time we all need an outsider’s reminder of just how others perceive us here in Goshen. These magazine rankings have provided that and according to them, Goshen College is as good as we have always thought it was.
