GC students arrive for a fresh start

This weekend hundreds of Goshen College students pulled onto campus and began unpacking their clothes, their laptops, their bicycles and their hopes that the coming school year will be a successful one. Classes for the 2010-11 school year begin this week. Move in days — perhaps the most exciting days — were Saturday and today.

Some students met their roommates for the very first time, initiating one of the more delicate negotiations of life: Top bunk or bottom bunk? Parents squeezed their "babies," one last time before leaving them behind, their minds still spinning from the fact this day finally came.

The Goshen News would like to take a second and welcome back all the Goshen College students who choose to attend school here. We are thankful they do, for Goshen College is a vital piece of this community that enhances our quality of life. It provides jobs, community resources and, at the very least, the most attractive gateway into the city.

Goshen College also offers a point of view that, while sometimes controversial, provokes necessary dialogue that otherwise might be ignored. Discussion, civil debate and a thirst for understanding our diversity are qualities this paper considers sacrosanct in strengthening the community we are. Goshen College touts these same ideals. This is not to say we always agree with what is being said, but we appreciate the opportunity to listen, think and then speak.

There is no doubt in our opinion that we are a better community for having Goshen College here. Good luck students. We hope you have a great year.

We don't want to be on this top 10 list

But Elkhart and Kosciusko counties have again cracked the top 10 for the number of meth labs found, this time for 2011. Elkhart County was ranked second and Kosciusko third. Vanderburgh County, way down on the Ohio River, has been awarded the infamous top spot.

Stahly has served his community well
There are moments that cause us to say “oh, no,” and “outstanding” nearly in the same breath. That’s how we felt recently when Bruce Stahly announced that he plans to retire as superintendent of Goshen Community Schools in June. We said “oh, no,” because we know how important Stahly has been to the school corporation for the past 13 years. And we said “outstanding,” because we know how much he deserves this after a job well done.
Stahly came to Goshen in 1999 as deputy superintendent. He had worked previously as the assistant superintendent of finance for the South Bend Community School Corp. In July 2002 Stahly was promoted to superintendent of Goshen’s schools. That was a great decision by school trustees.
