DUNLAP —
In musician circles, “selling out” is often viewed as a bad thing.
Not so at the Concord High School music department. And not when it involves packing in a crowd.
Last year marked the debut of a concert showcasing the talents of Concord’s student percussionists. The inaugural event was a success, nearly selling out.
“This year, our goal is to sell out,” Concord percussion instructor Ben Runkel said.
The concert — dubbed “Groove!” — is a showcase featuring 22 high school percussionists, plus extra musicians on guitar and keyboards. It will take place Feb. 23 at Concord Junior High School. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and doors open at 7.
Tickets cost $6 and can be purchased by calling the Concord music office at 875-4105.
‘Sensory overload’
Runkel described the concert as a “sensory overload kind of show” with lots of lights and multimedia effects.
“It’s the look and feel of a rock concert, and that’s the feel we’re going for,” Runkel said.
“Groove!” promises to be a genre-hopper, with music ranging to from progressive rock to drum-and-fife, classical, Scottish drumming and Brazilian drumming, along with pop and contemporary tunes.
“It’s a plethora of musical styles,” Runkel said.
