Art gallery opens in Goshen Friday

ALBION — The Gallery at the Millrace, opening Friday at 9 a.m., will be a new venue for viewing the work of the local artists who occupy Goshen’s Millrace Center.

The center is two blocks west of downtown Goshen, adjacent to the recently dedicated Powerhouse Park along the old millrace. The gallery space will be inside Sweet Water Interiors at the same address. Visitors can park behind the building or in one of two public lots near the gallery.

Art collectors and downtown entrepreneurs Dave Pottinger and Faye Peterson, owners with Pat and Owen Weaver of the Millrace Center, have juried and placed on exhibit art in a variety of media from the center’s five guilds and five individual studios.

The gallery will remain open through 9 p.m. Friday  as a stop along the self-guided Goshen Arts Tour, formerly Goshen’s annual Open Studio Tour, the focus of the downtown First Friday event. On Saturday, the celebration at the gallery continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 100 artists belong to a Millrace Center Guild or occupy individual studio space there, and several of the exhibiting artists are expected to welcome visitors during the show hours. Most of the art will be offered for sale.

Studios at the guild which are also expected to be open during the two-day art tour include the Clay Artists Guild, the Jewelry Guild, the Painters Guild, the Photographers Guild and the Woodworkers Guild. Individual artists’ studios include those of Wilma Harder, jewelry designer; Gail Janssen, fiber artist; Rachel Shenk, woodblock printmaker; Jim Shenk, guitar maker; and wood designers Gene Short and Jake Loewen.

Following the opening weekend, the Gallery at the Millrace will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the same hours as Sweet Water Interiors. Also at the Millrace Center are Rachel’s Bread, a European-style bakery and café, and the Goshen Farmers Market, open on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year.
