A showcase of Goshen’s creative community is set this weekend during the eighth annual Open Studio and Downtown Arts tour.
Exhibits will include craft brewing, two- and three-dimensional art, dancing and music.
“This year, we’ve expanded from the original Goshen Open Studio tour to showcase a broader range of art, including culinary and brewing arts,” said First Fridays Coordinator Katrina Maust. “There’s certainly no shortage of artistic talent in our community and this month’s First Fridays brings it all front and center.”
Maps for the two-day event are available at the tour headquarters locations: Goshen Theater, 216 S. Main St., Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., and Art Alley Studio 55, 119 1/2 S. Main St., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The arts tour will include the work of Millrace Center artists Friday and Saturday at 212 W. Washington St. At Found, 208 S. Main St., works by 10 Graber family artists will be on display both days. Works by Ben Stutzman @ Springer Design, 226 S. Main St., will be on display Friday only.
Additional First Fridays highlights include:
• “I Spy the First Friday’s Guy!” — Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can find the “First Fridays Guy” at participating business and get their maps marked in each store to earn prizes.
• Party at the Goshen Powerhouse, Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. — The public is invited celebrate the grand opening of the expanded lot at the Goshen Farmers Market and Goshen Powerhouse. A ribbon-cutting is planned at 5:30 p.m., followed by a free concert by “Samuel Jay and Jewels” and children’s activities at the Farmers Market beginning 6 p.m.
• “Diversity Day” performances at Goshen Theater, Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. — Entertainers from the Goshen and Michiana areas will showcase music, dance and artistic traditions from around the United States and around the world.
• Flu shot clinic, Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Menno Travel, 210 S. Main St. — IU Health Goshen Hospital’s Community Wellness and Education Department staffers will provide flu shots. The cost is $15.
• Goshen High School Art Auction, Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 215 E. Lincoln Ave. — The auction will feature student art and community items that will be silent-auctioned for support of the GHS Art Department. Free chili and chicken noodle soup will be provided by First Presbyterian Church personnel.
• City Church of the Brethren Tribute to the Arts, Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 203 N. Fifth St. — The public is invited to a performance by Lee Anne Stewart Dance School students. Thirty-three pupils will be performing jazz, tap and ballet dance.

Charlie Daniels Band coming to Shipshewana
He’s got the hat, the fiddle and the hits. And he’s feeling revitalized.
In a recent telephone interview with The Goshen News, 74-year-old Charlie Daniels said he is feeling like a new man after his pacemaker procedure earlier this year. He says everything is in sync and he is having a great time on the road.
“I’m enjoying this tour and we are looking forward to making music in Indiana,” the country-rock icon said. -

Wawasee High School choir to revisit ’50s-’80s
The Wawasee High School Choral Department will present an “American Bandstand” Pops Show Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

LIBRARY NEWS: Local writers' work available in Bristol
The Soul, Ink writing group has put together stories, essays and poems that are available at the Bristol library. A copy of the local authors’ work is available for $5.

Kris Kristofferson to perform at Lerner Aug. 10
A onetime Highwayman is headed to downtown Elkhart.
Country musician Kris Kristofferson is scheduled to perform at The Lerner Theater, 410 S. Main St., Aug. 10. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30. -

Cemetery tour set for Saturday
The Elkhart County Historical Museum and the Elkhart Civic Theatre will return to Grace Lawn Cemetery in Elkhart for the annual cemetery tour.

Two Community School of the Arts children’s choirs will be joined by graduating CSA student performers as part of the annual spring Community School of the Arts Showcase Concert on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall.
