GOSHEN — Steve Martin owns a music store. He’s used to talking about music — loves it, actually, as anyone who’s been in his downtown Goshen shop can attest.
Some in the press have asked Martin to categorize The Spring Standards, the band set to play his venue this weekend. The Spring Standards have been testing Martin’s descriptive prowess.
“These guys are almost impossible to pigeonhole,” he said. “And this new album reflects that.”
“This new album” is “yellow//gold,” released this spring. The tour in support of the double EP will bring The Spring Standards to Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St., Saturday. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
Martin said the Standards started as an acoustic trio, then began adding rock songs with its second release. He shorthands the Standards sound as “ebullient pop rock,” strong on pop hooks and tight harmonies.
Listening to the group, Martin hears the harmonies and pop sensibilities of the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks-era Fleetwood Mac. He also hears the Eurythmics and a New Wave energy.
Martin saw The Spring Standards live and says he fell in love with the group’s music and high energy. He’s not the only fan. Count Conan O’Brien in the Standards corner, too. The band’s June 18 performance on “Conan” was actually its second appearance on the show.
“Conan had them on based on their first EP,” Martin said.
Tickets for the Spring Standards show cost $15 and are available at Better World Books, 118 E. Washington., next door to Ignition Garage.
