GC Symphony Orchestra to perform Friday

GOSHEN — The Goshen College Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Christopher Fashun, will present its spring concert in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The program will be highlighted by a performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor,” featuring Associate Professor of Music and violinist Solomia Soroka. The orchestra will also perform works by Humperdinck, Marquez and Stravinsky.

Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students and are available at the door one hour before the concert.

Fashun joined the Goshen College Music Department in 2010. He has conducted the University of Iowa Philharmonia and All-University String Orchestras and was the music director of the St. Ambrose University Community Symphony Orchestra in Davenport, Iowa.

Fashun’s conducting experience includes leading orchestras and wind bands at the high school and middle school levels and directing jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles and drum lines at the high school level.

Fashun received his master of music degree in percussion performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied with Anthony DiSanza and continued his conducting studies with David E. Becker.

He is in the final stages of completing his doctorate of musical arts in orchestral conducting from the University of Iowa, where he studies conducting with William LaRue Jones and viola with Christine Rutledge.

Born in L’viv, Ukraine, Soroka has won top prizes in three international violin competitions held in the former Soviet Union — the Prokofiev, Lysenko and Zolota Osin’ competitions. Soroka earned her master’s degree and completed postgraduate studies in the Kyiv (Ukraine) Conservatory, and later served on its faculty in the chamber music department. She received a doctor of musical arts degree from the Eastman School of Music.

Soroka has toured and recorded extensively with her husband, pianist Arthur Greene. Their Naxos recording of “Four Violin Sonatas” by William Bolcom was selected as a Recording of the Month with the highest ranking for both artistry and sound quality by Classics Today, and received positive reviews in various journals.
