Six-time Grammy winners, The Chieftains are recognized for bringing Irish music to the world’s attention. Paddy Moloney formed The Chieftains in 1962 from the ranks of the top folk musicians in Ireland.
The Chieftains did not start performing together full time until 1975 when they marked the event with a historic performance in Albert Hall in London. The group includes Moloney, Kevin Conneff, Matt Molloy and Sean Keane (who will not be in attendance for the concert).
On top of the group’s six Grammy awards, The Chieftains have performed during the Pope’s visit to Ireland in 1979 and been the subject of a tribute Late Show in 1987, its 25th anniversary.
The Chieftains’ forthcoming album, “San Patricio,” a collaboration with Ry Cooder, is set for release March 9. The album also features guest stars Linda Ronstadt, Liam Neeson, Los Tigres del Norte, and many other celebrated Mexican, American and Irish musicians and singers.
A blend of the musical heritage of Ireland and Mexico, “San Patricio” tells the story of the San Patricio Battalion, Irish-Americans who deserted the United States Army to join the Mexican side in the Mexican-American War.
