Cequent workers need a leader

This is our letter written to U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman in reference to the proposed job loss announced last week at Cequent Towing Products:

Dear Mr. Stutzman,

Our family of 10 relocated to Goshen 10 years ago in order for Charles to begin employment with the Cequent Towing company, a division of TriMas Corp. Cequent is a major employer in this town to the tune of 450 jobs.

Last week the employees were informed that their jobs are in jeopardy as the owners of TriMas have made a preliminary decision to close this plant and move it to Mexico. We are wondering where are our representatives and why is this being allowed? This company received a tax abatement from the city of Goshen a couple of years ago. Are you just going to let them waltz out of this city without doing something to protect the local economy?

We are distressed that the people we elected to be our voice, such as yourself, have closed your office in our town. Where are you? Can we expect you to exercise your power in order to stop this horrible decision that is going to have a profound impact on 450 families locally? Congress is not in session. Why is your office in Goshen not open so that you can be reached? The United Steelworkers union is working to stop this closing. We know that they usually lean toward the Democratic candidates, but this would be a great opportunity for you to make a bi-partisan stand and stand with these people as they try to protect their jobs. We ask that you give this your urgent attention as we will be giving ours in the polls here in a few days. Feel free to contact us.

Editor’s note: As of Jan. 1, Elkhart County will no longer be served by District 3, part of the current district of U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman. Elkhart County will instead by served by the District 2 representative.

The “Gang of Eight” U.S. Senate members have drafted an immigration bill that’s worse then the amnesty bill signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1986. S. 744 gives those here illegally instant Registered Provisional Immigrant status, which means they are free from being deported if they register for amnesty.

Everyone has issues that they have to deal with in their lives. It’s when we become overwhelmed and our issues become so drastic that they are unbearable that the results can be catastrophic. Suicide is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable.

Goshen should stick with ‘Redskins’
I must respond to the letter to the editor from Mr. Ron Chupp (The Goshen News, May 9). What’s in a name, Mr. Chupp? I too have a Native American heritage, and for some reason, I am not offended by the term Redskins, or brown skins or any other color of skins.

There is hope through God
May I share what happened to me after praying about the issue of whether to have guns carried by school authorities at Goshen High School. While calling out to God, my question was: Why have we as a nation come to trusting in government agencies, such as Homeland Security, rather than obeying the Constitution in what you have declared through our forefathers?
