NAPPANEE — Nappanee City Council members on Tuesday voted to approve an ordinance amending ambulance rates and charges on second reading. There is still one more reading before the new rates become official.
Proposed rates for basic life support care would be $400 for residents and $500 for non-residents; for advanced life support 1 would be $600 for residents and $700 for non-residents; and advanced life support 2 would be $750 for residents and $850 for non-residents.
The rate for transporting the patient to the hospitals would be $12 per mile — previously the rates varied depending on destination. Emergency Medical Services Chief Jim Sumpter, Jr. has said that the increased rates would get Nappanee in line with other ambulance and EMS services.
In addition, an increase in paramedic intercept services to other departments is proposed as well. If passed, that charge would be $200 per intercept.
Mayor Larry Thompson informed councilwoman Janet Brown that the Board of Public Works now has the authority to adjust the charges on a case-by-case basis if a hardship exists.
Voucher payments
The council approved voucher payments of more than $1 million Tuesday. However, that amount was not exactly as it appeared, according to Clerk-Treasurer Kim Ingle. She explained that nearly $400,000 of that amount was for a new fire truck that came from the cumulative fire fund so there is no debt for the truck.
Ingle also explained that Indiana Department of Transportation reimbursed the city $428,000 for the water main project at U.S. 6 East, but it was direct deposited into the city’s account instead of utilities account so that had to be fixed.
