KMR Scripts, a drama publishing and performance rights licensing company in Valley Center, Kan., has announced that its Last Supper play, "Beneath the Upper Room," will be presented in Bristol April 21. The show will be presented at Bristol United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m.
The play, written by Kevin M. Reese, formerly of Elkhart, tells the story of Jesus’ last supper, but from the viewpoint of the women who served the meal. This unique re-telling of the age-old story brings new relevance to our lives today, according to Reese.
"When I was researching the story," Reese said, "I knew I didn’t want to write yet another play about 13 guys sitting around asking ‘It is I, Lord.’ How many times had I set in a pew, watching such a performance, and not remembering anything about it on the way home?"
"About that time," Reese said, "I was visiting relatives, and it dawned on me as to what room in the house was the most important, the most vibrant. The kitchen! I come from a very large family and grew up with lots of aunts in the kitchen, cooking meals and solving the world’s problems. That was the inspiration behind the play."
Reese said he has contacted many of his relatives (many of whom he mentions by name in the dedication to his script) and hopes to have a large family contingency at the service. Three of his nieces are performing in the play: Barbara Reese, Elizabeth Reese and Kristina Reese, daughters of Mark and Jill Reese, of Union, Mich.
Since 1993, KMR Scripts shows have been produced by theaters throughout the United States and numerous foreign countries to more than two million people. "Beneath the Upper Room" has been presented in more than 80 churches all over the United States since its premier in 2006.
The play is being presented by the Bristol United Methodist Church as its Maundy Thursday worship service and is directed by Sylvia Shayler. Admission is free to the public. Communion will be served.
