GOSHEN — A group of 13 people were less than pleased to see clouds roll into Goshen Wednesday morning.
Members of the Calsol solar vehicle racing team from the University of California-Berkeley had to make a pit stop in the parking lot of St. John’s Catholic Church overnight Tuesday to recharge their batteries — literally. The team is taking part in the 2012 American Solar Challenge, and U.S. 33 was part of their route Wednesday from Kalamazoo, Mich., to Normal, Ill. The team got into Goshen at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday and departed at 9:22 a.m. Wednesday.
The car, which they built and designed by hand, is averaging more than 212 miles per day on most days on a full battery change when the sun is out. On days when there is no sunlight, such as the second day of their race from Erie, Penn. to Mansfield, Ohio, the car averages about 20 miles before the battery needs charged again.
“It took a year to design, a year to build and we have been racing this car for about a year,” said junior mechanical engineering major Brian Grof.
Other cars were expected to roll through the Goshen area Wednesday morning. Teams participating in the race are from colleges all across the country, including Michigan State, Oregon State and Texas Tech. The race began July 14 in Rochester, N.Y. and is expected to conclude July 21 in St. Paul, Minn.
