Family night is a wet night at Goshen pool

GOSHEN —

What better way to have fun with your family than to jump in the pool?

That’s the idea behind Family Fun Days at Shanklin Pool, held every Wednesday evening. Pool Manager Gary Schanz said the weekly event has been going on for years, but was never particularly advertised until this year.

"We just come up with games for families to play in the water with their kids and we try to make it enjoyable for everybody," Schanz said.

Family Fun Days take place during the pool’s "twilight" hours from 6 to 8 p.m.

"We’ve been doing it since we opened the season May 28, and we’ve been getting more and more people coming," Schanz said. "We make announcements all day long here (at the pool) for people to come back for family night."

Schanz said the activity or game for each week is different and chosen depending on how many people show up. Last week, he brought out all the beach balls and other balls they had and threw them all into the pool en masse. An inflatable volleyball net is also brought out for adults during the lifeguards’ break, the first 10 minutes of every hour.

"Everybody had a blast," Schanz said.

Wednesday, Schanz set up what he called a "green hog wrestle." He greased four watermelons and put them one by on in the pools — one for young children, two for older children and one for adults — for attendees to try and get from the deep end to the shallow end of the pool. The person who managed to get to the other end with the watermelon then received a quarter of the watermelon, with the rest distributed to other participants.

In order to qualify for the family price of $6, groups must consist of parents or guardians and their legal dependents.

Other weekly events

Along with Wednesdays’ family fun days, other special events are held at the pool every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during regular pool hours.

Monday’s Teen Scene offers $2 admission for teens with a school ID. Grandparents’ Summer Sittin’ Tuesdays offers free admission to grandparents when accompanied by children, who must pay the regular rate, 3 years or older. College Student Thrifty Thursdays offer college students $2 admission with a college photo ID.
