GOSHEN — Students at Parkside Elementary School are doing their part to combat cancer.
Second-grade classes at the Goshen school raised $1,600 for the IU Health Goshen Hospital Center for Cancer Care and donated other gifts to the center during a short field trip to the hospital Thursday.
According to teacher Karen Brock, this is the third year of students raising money for the cancer center. The donations were a class project in which students learned about generosity.
In addition to the $1,600, students also donated gift cards to be given to patients as a celebration gift when their treatment is finished. They also created a quilt for patients to use with messages of support and hope on it.
The students donated their items to doctors and nurses at the cancer center and spoke with new cancer center Medical Director Dr. Roderich Schwarz.
