Volunteers will can tons of turkey

GOSHEN —  The Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner will be stationed at The Depot in Goshen Friday and Saturday and Monday through Jan. 19.

In eight days, 68,000 pounds of turkey will be cut and canned for distribution to hungry people around the world.

Hundreds of volunteers come together to cut the turkey thighs into one-inch pieces, work with the canning crew to fill and seal the cans, and then wash and label each can.

These cans of meat provide vital nourishment and nutrition to those who receive them, in places like Haiti, North Korea and Ukraine, according to MCC officials. In addition to the international distribution, 10 percent of the meat canned in Goshen will be available for local distribution throughout the Great Lakes region.

Want to get involved? Donations are being accepted to help cover the $120,000 cost of the turkey and canner operations. In addition, volunteers can help with meat canning at The Depot.

Contact the Great Lakes Office at 574-534-4133 or GreatLakesOffice@mcc.org for more information.

Mennonite Central Committee is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches.
