TOPEKA —
The halls were packed with children and adults all standing in orderly lines behind the teacher. They were holding hands as they walked from classroom to classroom; then over to the cafeteria for a hot school lunch and off to recess.
It was a crisp, fall afternoon this past week, but the children were ecstatic to have grandma and grandpa outside on their playground pushing them on the school swings.
This day was a different day — it was Grandparent’s Day at Topeka Elementary.
“I loved being here today,” said grandmother Debra Randall as she squeezed her 6-year-old granddaughter Sydney Posey. “I took a vacation day off from work to be here. Last year I spent it at my grandson’s school, Meadowview. It is wonderful to see where they spend their day. After this we go out to recess.”
Sydney wrapped her arms tightly around her grandmother’s arm and pushed her face against her.
“I thought she wasn’t going to come,” Sydney said softly. “I almost cried and then she came and now I am happy.”
