GOSHEN —
The Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety Monday approved a request for temporary reverse angle parking along the north side of Jefferson Street. City Engineer Mary Cripe showed a short video to the board and meeting attendees that highlighted communities with reverse angle parking already installed.
“We’re going to have the YouTube video up on our Facebook account,” Cripe said. “We’ll also have brochures at all of the parking areas for people to get information. We’re just trying to get information out to people about it.”
Cripe said reverse angle parking is already being used in many cities, including Freemont, Ind.
“In some cities, this is all they have,” she said, referring to the parking. “This is trying something new. People are concerned about seeing things when they back out, and we have a lot of bicyclists. This should help.”
Mayor Kauffman said the new style of parking had support at the City Council meeting held June 5.
“I hope people will use it,” he said at the board meeting. “I think it’s a good idea.”
Kauffman referenced the video when he said that some change is difficult.
“There will always be naysayers, and one man in the video said the change was difficult to make,” he said. “But if people stop and think about it, it makes sense. This is just a whole lot better.”
Kauffman said the ultimate goal, if the trial run proves successful, is to put this style of parking on Main Street.
Other business:
• The Board approved a recommendation for bids for the 2012 asphalt paving project. The City Engineering Department recommended the board approve Phend & Brown’s $104,412.50 bid for the project, which was the lowest of three bids.
• The board also approved a request for permission to block three parking spaces in front of The Electric Brew and The Papers today to load roofing supplies and equipment.
• The board and public were notified at the meeting that the Wilden Avenue Bridge construction will continue. The bridge will reopen Thursday. Cottage Avenue Bridge will be closed for approximately two weeks.
• The board approved a temporary request for a no parking order in the subdivision of Larimer Greens and condos for the “Celebrate America” event and fireworks on July 1. The request includes all roads in between, but not including Berkey Avenue, Greene Road, Plymouth Avenue and Indiana Avenue. The request restricts parking to one side of the street so that emergency responders can have access to this area, if need be.
• The board approved the request for acceptance of right of way and easements for Parke Northe, lots two and three, at Monday’s meeting. The board also approved the Parke North drainage plan.
• The board approved a change order for the Dickerson Landing Neighborhood project. The change order adds money for storage building upgrades, chain link fence and covers costs for additional clearing and grubbing, adding an additional $6,300 to the contract.
