Fairfield Superintendent Tom Tumey to retire

BENTON —  Fairfield Superintendent Tom Tumey will retire Jan. 1 after 36 1/2 years in education, the last 12 at Fairfield.

The board accepted his retirement letter at Thursday’s meeting.

“You’ve done a great job,” board member Brent Welty said. “I’ve been here for all 12 of your years. I think your legacy will be that you’ve hired some outstanding people. You should be proud of where Fairfield is now.”

Retired teacher and teacher’s union representative Marilee Keim echoed Welty’s praise.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Mr. Tumey over the years in a number of difficult situations,” Keim said. “I am so impressed with your professionalism, integrity and civility. It is so very much appreciated.”

Tumey said that after 23 years as an administrator, he is ready to move on to something different.

“I’m not sure what that is, but I’m open,” he said.

Teacher evaluations

In other business, the board approved a three-year contract with two companies to support and implement a teacher evaluation model. RANDA Corp. will provide the Tower teacher evaluation program, which will allow administrators to use iPads in the classroom to record the observation component of the evaluations. It will also provide the data storage necessary to track student test scores (both ISTEP and end of course assessments), which are also a part of teacher evaluations. RANDA IS compatible with Educational Insights, which will provide professional development opportunities for teachers tailored to specific areas in need of improvement.

The total cost for three years will be $54,940, with an average of $18,313.33 per year. Of the programs administrators examined, the ones they liked also happened to be the most cost-effective, Assistant Superintendent Steve Thalheimer said.

New position

The board also approved the creation of a new instructional resource teacher position at Benton Elementary School. The full-time position will be for both data collection and instruction and used by all grade levels, but will focus where the need is greatest, Benton Principal Dan Sharp said.

“They have been strapped as far as reaching the needs of all students,” Tumey said. “This certainly helps the cause.”

The board approved a number of employments, including: Michelle Flickinger and Keeton Zartman, math teachers, Fairfield Junior-Senior High School; Scott Lehman, music/band teacher at New Paris and Millersburg elementaries; Kassidy Crimmins and Patti Sprunger, English teachers at Fairfield; and Kim Yoder, kindergarten teacher at New Paris.
