NAPPANEE CITY COUNCIL: Department heads offer reports

NAPPANEE — The heat may be on, but things are keeping cool in Nappanee as department heads gave reports Monday night at the City Council meeting.

Emergency Medical Services Chief Jim Sumpter Jr. reported there were 65 calls in June.

“There was one transport from Friend Fest (radio station WFRN’s sponsored two-day music festival held at Amish Acres over the weekend) and so far no heat related calls,” he said.

Fire Chief Don Lehman reminded council members that July 14 is the annual fireman’s fish fry at the fire station from 4 to 8 p.m. The fish fry is a major fundraiser for the volunteer fire department. The fish fry has become part of the Embrace the Pace Days in Nappanee

“When you’re done eating fish,” said council member and Chamber of Commerce Director Jeff Kitson, “join us on the lawn for a concert on the green — Deadwood Bluegrass Band will be playing.”

The concert on the green will be from 5 to 8 p.m. and there will also be an ice cream social.

Elder Haus Senior Center Director Connie Fink reported her new hires started today. She also reported that along with her written June report she had compiled some half-year figures. Those figures include: taxi runs — 492 for June and 2,830 for the first half of the year; visits — 471 for June and 2,873 for mid-year and Real Service Meals — 341 for June and 2,415 for the first half of the year. Fink also said that there were 305 unduplicated visits for the first six months of the year.

Special programs in June included a soap-making class at Winona Lake with lunch at The Boathouse, trip to view the quilt gardens in Elkhart, Wakarusa, Nappanee and Goshen with lunch in Elkhart and a stop at The Chief in Goshen. Thirty-seven people attended the Amish Acres Round Barn Theatre production of State Fair.

Clerk-Treasurer Kim Ingle informed council members that auditors from the State Board of Accounts “moved in” last week and will be in the office for approximately six weeks.
