Hundreds compete in city’s annual Kids’ Try-athlon

GOSHEN — GOSHEN — With a slight overcast and temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s, young triathletes swam, biked and ran to the finish line at Shanklin Park Saturday morning. Hundreds of youth ages 5 to 16 participated in the annual Goshen Kids’ Try-athlon.

After crossing the finish line, 11-year-old Steve Wright III of Goshen said, “It was awesome.” It was really hard, he pointed out, because after swimming and biking he had to run. “It’s really hard to get past all the running without jogging or stopping for a minute,” Wright said.

But he’ll be back next year for more.

Coming in at about the same time as Wright was Raphael Hernandez-Walton, 10, Goshen. What did he think of the triathlon? “It was pretty painful,” Hernandez-Walton said. His best effort was in swimming, he thought.

This is the first time the Hernandez-Walton family has participated in the event — and there were three family members on the course. “It’s exciting,” said Barbara Hernandez of Goshen.

“Super exciting!” added cousin Jennifer Walton-Clark.

Unlike newcomers Wright and Hernandez-Walton, the Haverstocks are old hands in the city’s Try-athlon.

This year, sisters Jaedyn, 9, and Jenna, 13, finished with this year being Jaedyn’s first year on the longer course. Mom Joyce said, “It was a little more tiring.” Cheering them on along with mom were dad, Kevin, and sister, Kailyn, 18.

Top times in each division were:

5 to 6 boys non-swimmers: Drake Bowers, Goshen — 14:62.02

5 to 6 girls non-swimmers: Mia Diaz, Goshen — 15:57.07
