GOSHEN —
Longtime Goshen City Councilman Tom Stump wants to continue representing Goshen’s interest, but wants to do it while serving on Elkhart County Council.
Stump, a Republican, filed paperwork Wednesday to run for one of the three at-large seats on county council.
Stump was re-elected to a fifth term on city council last fall, but stressed he is not abandoning Goshen. Instead, he wants to represent Goshen’s interest at the county level.
He said he believes he can help the city of Goshen and the county resolve an impasse in resolving traffic congestion along part of Kercher Road on the city’s south side. The city and county have had differing views on how road construction could improve traffic flow.
Stump, 61, was first elected to city council in 1987 and served four terms before running for mayor and losing. Four years later, in 2007, he was elected to an at-large seat on city council. He was re-elected to that seat in November, winning the second-most votes among four candidates for the two seats.
Republican incumbent county council at-large representative John Leatherman has already filed to run again. Stump said he was told incumbent David Ashe is expected to run again. Dennis Sharkey announced recently he would not seek re-election to his at-large seat.
Randy Wilson, of Elkhart, has also filed to run for an at-large seat on county council.
