WAKARUSA —
A fundraiser is taking place this Friday as the community continues its support of a young Wakarusa Elementary student battling leukemia.
Six-year-old Simon Blanchard is a kindergarten student in Jan Snider’s class at Wakarusa Elementary. When his teachers and classmates learned of Simon’s diagnosis of ALL, or acute lymphoblastic leukemia, during the Thanksgiving 2012 holiday, an outpouring of prayers, financial assistance and gestures of goodwill have since been showered upon his family, which includes Simon’s parents Bryon and Tonya Blanchard and his younger sister, Rowan.
Simon is currently receiving treatment through Riley Children’s Hospital and South Bend Memorial Hospital.
On Friday, “Team Simon” Nelson’s BBQ chicken and “pitatoes” will be sold from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at Ind. 19 and C.R. 40, directly across the street from the McDonald’s/BP plaza.
Each chicken half sells for $6, while an order of “pitatoes” will be $4. Those who have purchased advanced sale tickets for reservations on chicken orders must pick up their items prior to 5 p.m. on the day of the sale.
The proceeds will be given to the Simon Blanchard Benefit Fund, which has been established at Interra Credit Union. The money will be given to the family to help defray the costs incurred with Simon’s medical bills, daily living expenses, travel costs, and other needs.

Planners like changes to CVS parking lot
Access to the CVS at 410 S. Main St. in Goshen could soon be easier for those with disabilities following a ruling by the Goshen Plan Commission Tuesday afternoon.
During their meeting Tuesday, Goshen Plan Commission members gave their blessing to a request by CVS Pharmacy and State Permits Inc. for a major change to the CVS Planned Unit Development that seeks to reconfigure the north portion of the parking lot to increase the overall Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility of the site. The final site plan for the PUD was also approved by the commission Tuesday, and the request will now be forwarded on to the Goshen City Council with a favorable recommendation. -
Council won’t fund school sidewalks
