Board takes care of housekeeping

The Board of Public Works and Safety handled largely housekeeping items at a short meeting Monday afternoon.

• A contract for demolition of the home at 705 New York St. was awarded to Clarkco Inc., of Nappanee, at a cost of $10,900. Clarkco will be responsible for demolition, removal, transport and disposal of all demolition debris.

• The board signed the agreements with the Michiana Area Council of Governments for the city’s new hybrid vehicles.

• An agreement with Diamond Environmental Services Inc., to remove approximately 123 linear feet of asbestos pipe insulation at the former Western Rubber building, 620 E. Douglas St., was approved at a cost of $1,205. The removal must be complete by Feb. 12 and a final report will be submitted by March 12.

• A series of letters reporting to the Indiana Department of Transportation that the city will need no additional right of way for eight potential stimulus-funded street improvement projects were signed.

• Permission was given to advertise for bids for an extension to the Center Street sewer.

• A formal announcement was made of the promotion of Assistant Street Commissioner Denny Long to the post of street commissioner following the retirement of Barb LaDow.
