In a few weeks, heading east of Bristol will lead straight to the past.
The 30th annual Bonneyville Celebration is set from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9. The event takes place at Bonneyville Mill, located two and a half miles east of Bristol along C.R. 131 south of Ind. 120.
Bonneyville Mill, the oldest continually operating grist mill in Indiana, will be open both days of the celebration. Cornmeal, buckwheat and whole wheat flour will be available for purchase, and tours and grinding demonstrations are scheduled over the course of the weekend. Also, craftspeople including spinners and weavers, basket makers and woodworkers will offer demonstrations during the festival.
Musicians and dancers will also be featured. Headliners are set to include Kalamazoo-based group Red Tail Ring and Chicago folk musicians Small Potatoes, and there will be a duo performance by members of Goldmine Pickers. Also scheduled are Sweet Adelines, Riverbend Quartet, the Gustafson Zook Family and Heartland Country Cloggers.
Games and other activities are planned in the children’s area. Younger attendees can take part in rope making, candle dipping, sack races and tug-o-war.
Local bakers are invited to participate in the annual Bonneyville Baking Contest. Contest rules and entry forms are available at Bonneyville Mill, the Elkhart County Park Office in Goshen or online at www.elkhartcountyparks.org.
Food will be available at the festival, and an “early bird” pancake and sausage breakfast is set from 7 to 11 a.m. both days.
Admission is $3 per person or $7 per carload. Visitors arriving before 9 a.m. will be admitted free of charge. Those driving to the festival are asked to enter on C.R. 8, south of Ind. 120.

Planners like changes to CVS parking lot
Access to the CVS at 410 S. Main St. in Goshen could soon be easier for those with disabilities following a ruling by the Goshen Plan Commission Tuesday afternoon.
During their meeting Tuesday, Goshen Plan Commission members gave their blessing to a request by CVS Pharmacy and State Permits Inc. for a major change to the CVS Planned Unit Development that seeks to reconfigure the north portion of the parking lot to increase the overall Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility of the site. The final site plan for the PUD was also approved by the commission Tuesday, and the request will now be forwarded on to the Goshen City Council with a favorable recommendation. -
Council won’t fund school sidewalks
GOSHEN — Goshen City Council members voted along party lines Tuesday to defeat a proposal by Goshen Community Schools for a 50-50 cost split between the city and the school corporation to pay for a $125,000 sidewalk expansion project.
