UPDATE: Goshen woman rescued from fire; boyfriend held on arson charge

GOSHEN — Goshen firefighters rescued a woman from the balcony of her burning apartment shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and police later arrested her boyfriend on a charge of arson for allegedly starting the fire.

Lindsay Baker of 114 S. Seventh St. was at home alone in her second-floor apartment when the fire broke out, Fire Battalion Chief Rick Kauffman said. Baker crawled out of the apartment through a window to the southwest ledge of a balcony, where she waited for rescue.

Goshen firefighters were called at 8:34 a.m., raised a ladder up to the balcony and helped Baker down.

She suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment, Kauffman said. He added that it was a non-life threatening problem.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly, Kauffman said. There appeared to be no major damage to the apartment or to the other three apartments in the home, which is owned by landlord Jared Yoder.

Kauffman said the fire may have started in the kitchen.

Baker’s boyfriend, Trever Bouck, 24, was arrested after police and firefighters investigated the cause of the fire. He was charged with felony arson and booked into the Elkhart County Jail, according to Goshen police.

Bouck had told a Goshen News reporter at the scene, as he watched firefighters extinguish the blaze, that he and their 8-month-old daughter were not home at the time of the fire. Bouck said he was coming home from an employment agency when he saw the fire trucks in front of his house. He said seeing the emergency vehicle lights in front of his home was a shock and he was worried about his girlfriend.
