GOSHEN —
Bids and proposals for street and utility work were approved by members of the Goshen Board of Works, which met in weekly session Monday.
The bid from Niblock Excavating and Construction for paving the Shanklin Park Drive was approved Monday. The Niblock bid, for $38,870, was the lowest and best of three bids received last week.
The board also agreed to hire Sprectra Tech LLC to provide maintenance repairs to three city sewer lift stations and 13 manholes for the city’s wastewater system. The cost was set at not-to-exceed $61,890 and will be completed within 60 days.
In other business
• The board approved a request of the Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club for the staging of the annual 4-H Fair parade and closing of several streets for the parade on July 22 through the downtown. The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. that day.
Another street closing, for one-half block of East Jefferson Street on May 15 for a National Peace Officer Day observance, was also approved. That program will be from 5 to 7 p.m. that day, in front of the police/courts building at 111 E. Jefferson St.
• The board approved agreements with Zehr Construction, Goshen, for installation of countertops in the city courtroom, for $6,033, and with Troyer Carpets, Goshen, for floor coverings at the fire stations at 1203 College Ave., and 1728 Reliance Road, for a total of $4,330.
• A roof repair over the office at the central fire station, 209 N. Third St., was approved with Borkholder Cook Builders, at a cost of $1,846.
• The board approved the extension of a contract with Donohue & Associates, which is overseeing the construction of part of the combined sewer overflow detention project at the wastewater treatment plant. Because of additional work and reports expected through October, the contract was extended to include $17,000 in work. That pushed the total contract with Donohue to $3,246,492.
• Goshen officials noted receiving a notice from Norfolk Southern officials that the Beaver Road crossing was closed Monday for about 10 days to allow for repairs to the crossing.
• The board agreed to give relief of a sewer utility bill to Rhonda Mitchell, 118 Winchester Trails, after she experienced a water line break at her home.
• Board members also approved waiving parking rules for Vin Oeurn-Hem, 2905 Woodmere Lane, on May 18 and 19, during a memorial service time for her deceased father.
• The board also approved an agreement with Goshen General Hospital officials to allow interns in an emergency medical responder training to study in city fire department ambulances.

Handle poison hemlock carefully
