‘Stamp Out Hunger’ gets competitive

GOSHEN — Three local municipalities held a contest as part of a nationwide food drive.

The NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) recently kicked off the fourth annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Elkhart County employees held a friendly competition along with Elkhart and Goshen City employees to see who could raise the most food. The result was a total of 9,403 pounds of food raised, the highest total ever, and up 84 percent from 2011, according to a press release from the United Way.

Three categories — pounds of food donated, dollars distributed and highest per capita donation — were used to measure the success of the government competition. Elkhart County employees had the highest pounds of food donated, while Goshen City employees finished first in the last two categories.

Dollars donated are used to help pantries with needs that aren’t met by the food drive.
