DUNLAP —
Ed Swartley, director of The Window, advised the roughly 75 people he spoke to Saturday morning to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.”
Most people went the whole 3.1 miles.
The Homeward Bound 5K walk was held Saturday morning at Concord High School. The event is a collaboration between eight local agencies (Church Community Services, Emerge Ministries, Faith Mission of Elkhart, Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County, iFiT, LaCasa, Minority Health Coalition of Elkhart County and The Window) designed to help fight homelessness in the area.
According to Jennifer Doty, who was representing iFiT (Individual Families in Transition) and is the coordinator of the event, this is the second consecutive year for the 5K walk, though it has taken place off and on since 2003. The money raised from people participating in the walk is divided evenly between the eight agencies so they can better serve their clients. Uses for the funds range from helping people pay their utility bills to putting down a deposit for a new home.
“Due to the economic status of this area, there are people who need help from services like these more than ever,” Doty said.
Araceli Moreno, a Goshen High School teacher, was walking with her son Saturday morning. Moreno helps sponsor Fusion Latina, an organization designed for Hispanic students who wants to lend a helping hand to the Goshen community. She admitted that she did not know much about the event, but she received an e-mail about it and wanted to participate in order to gain more knowledge about services available in the area.
“I work with a lot of families who need assistance, so I wanted to see what services may be available to people,” Moreno said.
Tom McArthur, executive director at the Habitat for Humanity, explained that the collaboration of so many local agencies working toward a common goal (good housing for people who need it) speaks volumes of the community.
“There are folks in the community that, through circumstances out of their control, need help and are willing to work for it. So we want to be able to help them,” McArthur said.
The weather was relatively comfortable for the walk Saturday morning, but holding the event in February, you can never be sure what to expect. Regardless, the event was going to take place, rain or shine.
“We did that on purpose, because homeless people have to deal with bad weather too,” McArthur said.
