GOSHEN —
Goshen College held their 112th commencement ceremony Sunday afternoon, honoring the 288 members of the graduating class of 2010.
Along with those receiving their undergraduate degrees, 14 students received the first-ever masters of science in nursing degrees offered at the college, while seven other received masters of arts degrees.
Thirty-three students will graduate with double majors and 23 students will receive their degree with a grade-point average between 3.9 and 4.0, earning highest honors.
Goshen College President James Brenneman began by addressing the graduates — noting that he began his tenure as president with most of them four years ago.
The commencement speaker was Ronnie A. Yoder, who is the chief administrative law judge of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Yoder spoke about the notion of "immortality," pointing out that his father Raymond, a 1931 graduate of Goshen, has been immortalized through the Ray Yoder Scholarship for art and sculpting at the college. Yoder told the graduating class they have the same opportunity to be immortal in whatever path they choose to take in life.
"The world is vastly different now then when I grew up, but if you are able to find your niche — your center — you can be immortal too," Yoder said.
Judge Yoder, from Alexandria, Va., is a member of the American Bar Foundation, the Federal Bar Foundation and the Prettyman-Leventhal American Inn of Court. He has been active in numerous administrative law judges’ associations and in developing, teaching and writing on the administrative judiciary for more than 30 years.
