Stump, Letherman, Ashe win GOP council at-large ballot spots

GOSHEN — Elkhart County voters nominated two incumbent County Council members to at-large races, along with a long-time Goshen City Council member Tuesday in a five-way Republican race.

Tom Stump, Goshen, was the top vote-getter with 9,920 votes; John Letherman, Elkhart, 9,562; and David Ashe, Elkhart, 8,932. Elkhart businessman Randy Wilson received 8,361 votes and Jason Obendorf, head of the Elkhart County Young Republicans, had 7,814.

“It is a humbling experience,” Stump said shortly after learning that he was the top vote-getter in the primary race for County Council at-large. He credited hard work by many friends and people he met only recently with helping him win the nomination.

“I have friends across the county, old friends, but also people I met during this campaign,” Stump said.

Stump, a Goshen City Council member, ran on an issue of working toward better cooperation between county government and cities and towns and that issue may have been a factor in his victory.

“It gives me a platform to move that cooperation forward,” he said. “Of course we have an election in the fall. We should not take it for granted. You never take anything for granted.”

County Council President Letherman called the other two nominees “great guys.”

“I think the public understands that in these times of rapid change, we need people on the council with good experience,” Letherman said. He pointed out that David Ashe has two terms of experience on the Elkhart City Council and one term on the County Council.

“I am sure Tom (Stump), with his 20-some years of experience on the City Council will bring some good experience to the County Council,” Letherman said. He pointed out that Stump will replace Dennis Sharkey, Goshen, who decided not to run for re-election.

“We need some guys to represent the south part of the county. We will have good balance. We have three great guys,” Letherman said of the primary results. “I think it will be just fine.”

Letherman went on to say that the other two candidates, Obendorf and Wilson, ran good campaigns and are contributors to county government.

“They’ll be back,” he predicted.

“We had five good candidates that preached their future of Elkhart County to the people,” said Ashe. “It is good to see so many good quality candidates. I am just happy I get a chance to help move Elkhart County into the future.”

“We are going to continue to be a good steward of the county budget and do what we need to do for the benefit of the county,” Ashe said.

“For the people of Goshen, we understand the south peripheral road is a big issues and the (former) county jail and juvenile center are big issues. We will work to get stuff done,” Ashe said.
