Movies and events for teens are among the activities on tap for First Fridays this week in downtown Goshen.
A free showing of “Megamind” is planned at The Goshen Theater, 216 S. Main St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Immediately following will be a free showing of “E.T.”
A High School Mardi Gras Fest is scheduled at Bosco’s Place, 117 S. Fifth St., from 7 to 10 p.m. Students in grades nine through 12 are invited to dance and play carnival games. Teens can also create their own Mardi Gras-style mask to wear. Materials will be provided.
A Middle School Mardi Gras Fest is planned in the Goshen Theater Ballroom (third floor) from 7 to 9 p.m. Students in grades six through eight are invited to hang out, dance and play carnival games.
Admission is free to both youth-themed events and concessions will be available for purchase. Students must have a photo ID to attend the Mardi Gras events. Parents are reminded that middle-school student activities end promptly at 9 p.m., and they should pick up their children then.
Other First Fridays activities include:
• Local author Beth Neff will be at Better World Books, 118 E. Washington St., Goshen, from 5 to 9 p.m. to sign copies of her first novel, “Getting Somewhere.”
• Salon J owner and stylist Julia Herschberger will be cutting off the hair of Chandler Elementary teacher Erin Behan-Morillo. Behan-Morillo’s hair will be donated to Locks of Love after the event, which is set to start at 6 p.m.
Salon J is located at 130 S. Main St.
• Backyard Brass — billed as “a hometown band with a big brass sound” — will perform at Goshen City Church of the Brethren, 203 N. Fifth St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
• Cans for Kids — The public is invited to drop off aluminum cans at the Church of the Brethren from 5 to 9 p.m. Chamberlain Elementary School fourth- and fifth-grade students are trying to raise $4,500 to take a trip to Chicago in May to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. Money raised from the recycled cans be used to pay for bus transportation and entry fees to the museum.
• “Before Talkies” — The public is invited to the Goshen Historical society museum, 124 S. Main St., from 5 to 9 p.m. to enjoy silent motion pictures and popcorn.
First Fridays is a monthly event designed to highlight the artistic and business offerings of downtown Goshen.
